Kyal and Kara
Article Posted On: 04/12/2017
If you’re a fan of the block you might recognise this duo as Kyal and Kara; the couple who made their big debut in 2014 in the “Fans Vs Favs” series. They demonstrated their skill with professionalism and efficiency and we were fortunate enough to team up with them for their latest renovation at Long Jetty, NSW.
With a keen eye you will see some of our hardware and even a barn door scattered throughout their Long Jetty Reno.
We caught up with them earlier this year for a chat and they shared with us a few tid bits about where they find inspiration, how they manage their time, and how they make ideas translate into reality.
So I understand you and Kyal began renovating around 10 years ago, Do you remember the moment you decided to buy you first renovation property? What did it feel like?
We were 20 years old when we bought our first property. I was at university and Kyal was an apprentice so we didn’t have a huge load of money but we had been saving for years. When the time came to sign the papers we were very excited because we knew this was something we really wanted to do, but financially it was a stretch.
Did you have a particular theme in mind then? Do you try and suit the location to a particular style?
We bought a little shack in a suburb called Killarney Vale which was a 5 minute drive to the beach and right near the lake. But we knew we didn’t want to settle there. We renovated that house in mind for a coastal family home.
What is your overall design theme for your latest project, long jetty?
Our overall design theme for Long Jetty is to create a modern beach house with a palm springs feel.
Describe the style in three words?
Modern, Coastal and Palm-Springs. (Palm Springs counts as 1 word right?)
Why did you decide to add barn door hardware to the bedrooms walk in robes and ensuites?
At every stage of any renovation we are looking for ways to add value and make something look really cool. We were looking for something a bit different: It’s quite easy to swing doors with your average hinges and Rustica’s Barn Doors added a nice point of difference. We discovered them through a mutual friend and loved the concept as they have so many customisable options.
The door to the media room is 1.9m, why did you decide such an oversize door and what statement will this bring to the overall interior design?
We loved the idea of creating spaces that are multi-purpose. With the media room, keeping a door wide open makes the house feel more connected. It’s particularly important if you have young kids that you want to keep an eye on. But if you want to have a lazy Sunday, you can shut the blinds and close the barn door and create a more cinema cozy experience.
The barn door hardware in generally most popular in black, why did you choose white hardware?
We choose white hardware because we are creating a modern fresh coastal home, so everything is light and bright. White is a gorgeous statement and works in subtly with everything.
Obviously you’ve only just begun this project but how are you finding managing your time between the renovations and your business?
It’s tough. There are a lot of late nights and early mornings. When we’re renovating it doesn’t feel like work to us because it’s something we’re really passionate about. We have done enough renovations to know the end product is worth it.
You can read all about Kyal and Kara’s house renovation escapades through their prolific journal entries, which have kept us updated since their very first renovation in 2008 including topics from budgeting and financing and house hunting, down to the details of the shade of paint used on the house. Or, if you’d like to watch rather than read, they’ve also documented their renovations in a web series about their latest renovation in Long Jetty.
